August 30th, First day of class
Reflections:
I had found the first day of class very interesting. It was my first teaching method class so I didn't know what to expect. I was worried about fieldwork and was wondering if I even have what it takes to be an amazing teacher. I was unsure of what was expected in the class Sci and Tech Methods for Child Ed. But after I met my teacher, Dr. Smirnova, I realized that I would really enjoy this class. Dr. Smirnova isn't your average teacher. In her classroom, there are no due dates for assignments and she is extremely passionate about technology in the classroom. During class, we watched two videos, one called "A Vision of K-12 Students Today" and the other called "Do Schools Kill Creativity." Both of these videos surprised me greatly. In "A Vision of K-12 Students Today," I was surprised at how many teachers did not use technology in the classroom. I was surprised that in China there was a greater amount of honor students then there were in North America. In the video "Do Schools Kill Creativity" I agree with what Sir Ken Robinson when he expressed his idea that "creativity is just as important as literacy and should be treated as such." I agree with this statement because without creativity children will be unable to be children. Creativity leads children to think outside the box and come up with new ideas. Without creativity, we would not have the authors, poets or artist that we have today. Creativity allows children to take chances in their environment. I believe that as teachers we should encourage creativity instead of discouraging creativity. But at the same time children should also be taught about science, math, and history, lessons that will allow children to succeed in life. As teachers, we should allow children to explore their environment and encourage different ways of thinking. Dr. Smirnova's class and caused me to think differently and ask questions such as "What is the best way to teach children subjects using technology?" and "Is there a thing such as too much technology in the classroom?" In conclusion, I have realized that I will love Dr. Smirnova's class and that I am extremely excited to learn more about how to include science and technology in the classroom.
